Meet Mat 3: Kintsugi

My Meet Mat entry is going to be based on the Japanese art of Kintsugi, highlighting imperfection using gold. I wanted to take a golden cracked material that I'd made and really push it further as well as create multiple different pottery textures to elevate my texturing.

Update - 29 Dec 2023

I then began making the third material which was by far the hardest and took the most time. I wanted to achieve the speckled effect of the reference so I made several layers that would add to one another with these different colours which would combine to achieve this effect.

I then did the same again to achieve a pattern by changing the colours and applying the alpha. As there was no defined shape I added a sharpen filter to help make the pattern stand out.

Update - 27 Dec 2023

I've now finished the second out of the three materials. This was the blue/green material I planned to add to the body. I now need to work on the head. I will explain my process for each material after I have my entry finished :)

Update - 24 Dec 2023

I've completed the Kintsugi material and have one of the base materials for the pottery. One down 2 more to go!

I decided to make the simplest material first which was the plain black one. I made sure to add some colour variation and details to break it up and am happy with the result.

Update - 20 Dec 2023

I started by gathering several references for what I wanted to create. The most important part to me was getting the golden crack effect done as this is the main part of Kintsugi.

Some of the references I found gave me some great inspiration for the pottery textures. I split up the mesh into 3 different parts to include 3 different pottery materials.

I plan to update again once I have the golden cracks done and the base material for the pottery textures.
