Meet_Mat_Nian

This piece is inspired by the oriental legend "Nian Monster". This monster represents the arrival of the Lunar New Year. The monster has a lion-like appearance, reddish color, covered with scales, fierce-looking, with horns and oriental patterns.

Update - 5 Jan 2024

It occurred to me that since "Nian" only appears in winter during the Lunar New Year, I covered it with a layer of snow and frost to emphasize its association with winter. In the meantime I've added some details to the dress.

Update - 22 Dec 2023

I finished making the most basic clothes. Since this little monster is from the East, I kept the style and color scheme of the dress close to the Eastern culture. The monster has a red mane as a collar and is wearing a cotton undershirt and shorts. The edges of the dress have plush-like trim. I will be adding further details to the dress as well as the base later.

Update - 29 Nov 2023

Here's my progress so far. I finished making most of the head. Next I'm going to add the hair details (although I'm not quite sure how that will be made at this point) as well as the body parts. I did not submit my reference in the last update, I will add my reference in this time. Hope you enjoy my work!

Here is my reference.

Update - 21 Nov 2023

This is my entry for the contest. This work is inspired by the monster "Nian" in the traditional oriental culture. In mythology, this monster is often seen as a reddish color, similar to lions and tigers, which itself represents the coming of a new year (lunar calendar).

The production of this piece has just started and I have only partially finished the head. I utilized displacement mapping to complete the general outline of the head and drew the pattern on it.
