Character and environment visual development exercise done as part of a school assignment. I experienced worldbuilding and the design process in depth, and it was really fun!

This is a design exercise done for a school project.

The Adventures of Theia and Borp is an educational and comedic slice-of-life TV show set on an asteroid where Theia, Borp and her alien classmates get into daily shenanigans.

The story centers around learning about the environment around them through play and exploration, as well as Theia and her friends’ daily lives and self discovery. It’s all about having fun, learning from your mistakes and overcoming challenges.

Exploration and design of the background characters.

Ms Olivia is Theia's homeroom teacher, with a fascination for everything plants. She loves studying the flora and fauna of the asteroid they live on.

Han is the class diva. She's opinionated and rather blunt, but her outspoken nature and magnetic aura is what makes everyone clamor for the friendship of the most popular girl in school.

Mell is... There isn't much to say about them. They just appeared one day in the school, and everyone just lived with it and moved on. Who's to say they couldn't be royalty or something?

Exploration and design of the main characters, Theia and Borp.

(I initially chose design 5 for Theia, but I was dissatisfied as she didn't fit the sort of Victorian aesthetic I was going for. I chose design 2 going forward, and just used the value studies I did here for the rest of Theia's design process.)

Theia is a 12 year old girl, living with her mother in the desolated part of a Medium Size Asteroid, close to the star field.

Her father is a space explorer and he brings her back the strangest presents from his many trips.

She likes to read books and often fantasizes about them, imagining herself as the protagonist of the stories she reads. Her shortsightedness is a result of reading in dim light, so she has to wear glasses. When she’s not reading or knitting, she likes to take walks around the asteroid.

Due to her mom’s geology background, she is well-to-do and has an interest in rocks of various kinds and her room is decorated with many trinkets and crystals.

She’s not the most outgoing and her only friend is Borp, who isn’t the nicest but is still fun to hang out with. Theia uses the wool that grows on his back to knit, and collects the scales that fall off to use as decorations.

Theia's mouth chart and style guide.

Borp is a Scaly Space Alpaca. He’s extremely picky about food, so most of the time he ends up just eating his favourite, Starflowers, which isn’t the best for his digestion as they make him gassy (because stars are made of gas).

Haughty and smug, Borp can be a bit of a handful at times, but Theia loves him all the same. He’s only nice when he’s happy, usually ignoring Theia unless it’s time to go to the Starflower fields for lunch.

His favourite pastime is lounging around in the starlight and basking in the warmth.

Environment design, featuring trees, rocks and other plants/fungi.

General layout/long background of the asteroid, with some ideas for establishing shot locations

Exploration of Establishing shot #1: Outside Theia's house

Did a low- and high- key version, eventually settled for the high-key as it had better contrast.

Exploration of how the inside of Theia's house may look like. She has a very nice one-room house.

Exploration of Establishing shot #2: Theia's room

I had a few ideas, such as drawing a perspective looking at the loft, but eventually settled for the one on the ground floor as that would probably be seen more often.

This is my first time properly getting into the nitty gritty of worldbuilding and character design, as I'd only done it for fun prior. I had a lot of fun! Thank you for viewing!
