Hi! We are loserdesk, a team of two, and we are happy to present our first ever game to the Rookies! Inspired by the PS1 era, we created this piece in the hopes that it would reach people who find this old school style as charming as we do

Introduction

Here is the first game we have ever developed as a team of two! Sosig Adventures has been our Final Major Project and it is now completed and ready to play!

Sosig Adventures is a light and comedic short game designed to mimic the nostalgic visuals of the PSX era. The player follows Sosig around the house as she gathers food for her window-visiting friends without being detected by the Owner while using timing and hiding spots to their advantage!

Each level presents a cute new NPC that requests a different food item and can either leave satisfied or dissatisfied. This branchig can lead to one of two endings, depending on the player's success rate on each quest.

This game was realized using the following software:

Characters

Below are presented our two main (and only 3D) characters: Sosig and her Owner.

Since their UV maps were slightly more complex than the ones of the environment models, we were afraid the textures might come out too detailed and not fit in the same style with the rest. Fortunately, later in the pipeline, when the apartment textures were also made, that did not happen.



Next I present the flipbook to one of our 2D characters, an NPC that awaits at the window sill in hopes of receiving food. The process for each of the eight was similar: I would start with a base in Photoshop that I then added more shading to and, finally, animated.

I wanted to give each a unique personality through colors and movement. The other characters can be seen in the gameplay video at the bottom of the page!

Environment

Below you can see the three main rooms of our apartment that Sosig has to traverse through, in different stages of the pipeline. Every single model has been created from scratch by me and my teammate.

The intention was for each room to have its own prominent theme and also have its little spots that demand attention from the player; interactables. Sosig's room needed to be a representation of her character: in slight disarray, cramped, bright reds and saturated pink, it is decorated with tiny objects, books and plant pots.

To contrast this, the lounge is a dark green, and although old in style and condition, tidy and clean looking. The sickly green color, old discolored picture frame by the couch stand, boxy TV, rusty phonograph, vinyls and out of date patterned wallpaper show this circular room's ''mileage''. Big potted plants decorate it and the purple wooden floor is covered with a big neon colored carpet.

Vastly different from this is the kitchen, which is a big opening space coming from the hall. Bright and warm colors are dominant here. The kitchen feels cluttered while also open, having closed wooden cabinets, top shelves filled with kitchen utensils, plates and cereal, big hanging light bulbs, a washing machine, microwave, rustic designed table with a floral pattern cloth and a fridge. Few blue-green accents can be spotted.

Below are shown

-the initial blockout of the apartment, that went through drastic changes as it looked too square and robotic for our taste

-a top-down view of the finished apartment with the owner spline path integrated: this is the path our owner would take which slightly differs on each level to accommodate to its respective quest. The owner can stop along the way to interact with various objects and that either presents an opportunity for Sosig to pass without being seen or halts her in her way.



Gameplay

The main goal of the game is to steal food from various locations around the house before the timer ends. Those are the lounge, which presents the easiest challenge as the food items are directly placed for the player to collect, and two other locations in the kitchen: the cupboard and the fridge.

The latter two present more of a challenge, as the player needs to enter a minigame and collect the desired food item from there, while not being able to see what happens around them (i.e. what the owner is doing). Below are our minigame widgets.

If the owner is in the vicinity of the player while they have food in their inventory, there are various hiding spots around the apartment for food items to be hid in so Sosig is not caught stealing. They can be accessed at any time during the game and are placed close to the food locations.

Another mechanic is that of the microwave (which can be seen in previous images of the kitchen) - some of the food items need to be heated up before being brought back to the NPCs.
