Stylized Sharkalotl

by KaSonnTang on 1 Jun 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

This was made during the character art course. Even though the assignment needed a humanoid hand and head, I chose to take this opportunity to make a creature as I could get continues help from my teacher (had to some extra work for the human head and arm). Also rigged for the next course. Baked normal and AO.

For this project I wanted to try and make a quadruped creature as I have never done that. My main references were Taran Fiddler's creature and Ruined King sea monsters.

I got to learn a little about planning before creating a character, such as choosing a quality target and material call-outs. Doing this helped me know when to stop and to have a result of scoping how long it would take to be done. The other good thing was to know early on any issues I will have with the sculpt because of my inexperience with these certain things.

This character is supposed to be in a game, so my main worries was not with the sculpt but how I would create the low poly and texture and rig the rope and chains. As I was scared it would yield too many polygons for the quality target that I chose (Ruined King) and make my rigging experience too difficult.

By getting help from the teacher I learned some useful ways of saving time, such as finishing the UV's of these items before duplicating them. And the biggest thing that I learned was to create "fake" meshes for texture bakes and I has used this in every project since to yield better bakes. As some meshes are quite close to each other and have duplicated uv's, it would yield weird results.

During the last course I retopo and rigged my first quadruped which didn't turn out too well, that is why I chose to create one for this course and also rigged it. But this time I have learned what I did wrong last time and got help from the teacher, and it turned out way better than the last rig.
