Fade Valorant Fan sculpt

by Dreamfang on 1 Jun 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

I found out I only had 45 days to enter this challenge and make something. And I took that as a challenge! So here is the result of that non-stop work. Good luck fellow rookies!

Greetings fellow Rookies!

My name is Eva and I reside in South Africa. Though I'm an animator, I've always wanted to make a 3D character on my own. This contest was a call to action that ignited a flame and a "If not now, then when?" passion. I'll detail my process and challenges in recreating Fade from Valorant, as well as show some works in progress alongside the final renders. Good luck to everyone and I hope we all had fun on this challenge.

This sculpt and render was made in 45 days (2 Days worth of texturing, 2 days to light and render, the rest was Sculpting and fixing). Programs used was ZBrush (sculpt, rig/pose), Maya (UV editing), Substance Painter (Texturing),  and Blender Eevee (lighting, rendering).

My specific challenges were that this is the first character I sculpted from scratch, and the second character I have ever made, and that I only had 45 days to create this, as I learnt of the contest's existence late. Ah well, it sparked action, which is great enough on its own. I wanted to challenge myself and explore character creation. As well, South Africa has had a lot of power issues (between 2 and 12 hours no power a day! Crazy stuff...) so I am super glad this was finished, even if I had to cut some corners and simplify/remove certain parts of the concept.

Speaking of the concept:

I reached out to Joan Choi to utilise their concept/fan art of Fade and make a character out of it. Joan was gracious enough to give permission, which I am deeply thankful for. Though it isn't the fully animation ready version I wanted to craft, I can always do this later with my newfound knowledge.

Additional images:

The best I could do for a wip in a pinch. Texturing went by so quickly, as did rendering. This was the last save I had before posing Fade. The body was certainly an issue (it was 120k polies in this image, downscaled to 30k when I was done with it)

Lastly, here are some turn table renders.

Thanks for taking the time to look over this. Looking forward to seeing and enjoying what the others have done, and seeing how it all culminates. Until next time!
