Trashy

I've designed a 3D red carpet outfit made with trash. I believe that 3D design is the way forward to reduce waste in fashion. Instead of big companies creating numerous samples that go straight to landfill they can use 3D simulations to view the fit and look of their garments immediately. It’s a no brainer.

Trashy - 3D Fashion

As a freelance stylist in the “real” world I am all too aware of the effects of fashion on the environment and the sheer amount of waste that is created from the fashion industry. I believe that 3D design is the way forward to reduce waste in fashion. Instead of big companies creating numerous samples that go straight to landfill they can use 3D simulations to view the fit and look of their garments immediately. It’s a no brainer.

I’m self-taught and learnt how to use Clo3D during the pandemic using Youtube tutorials and I’m currently teaching myself how to use Blender. For The Rookie Awards I designed a 3D red carpet outfit made with trash. As a child I would create outfits with Trash bags with friend’s and we would put on catwalk shows for our parents - this is where I drew some of my inspiration for this specific outfit (In particular the trash bag sleeves).

The avatar is a Clo3D asset. Everything else was designed, created and rendered by me. The garment patterns were made in 2D and then sewn together digitally and simulated onto the avatar. The dress was made to resemble a plastic bottle - I created a water bottle label graphics and added it to the material on the under layer of the dress. The second layer of the dress was made in a more transparent material to give the appearance of plastic. I even scrunched up the dress at the waist to replicate a ribbed plastic water bottle. The detailing on the bottom of the dress is blue water bottle caps that I made and added to the hem.

The train is made from plastic can holders that I created with a 2D pattern and added the appropriate materials to make them look realistic, sewing them together to make a more dramatic red carpet look.

I made the trash bag sleeves, adding the yellow tie's to them and cinching them at the base to look like they might be closed at the bottom. I added two "bags" together to make the extravagant sleeves out of something very un-extravagant.
