Kate Ekberg's Rookies 2023 Entry

by KateEkberg on 1 Jun 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

Greetings! My name is Kate Ekberg and I am an artist with a passion for creating games. For my entry to The Rookie Awards 2023, I've chosen to showcase two of my portfolio projects, which highlight my areas of interest, UI and prop art.

Diegetic Nintendo UI

For my first project, I created a diegetic UI menu in Unreal Engine. Over the course of four weeks half-time, I got to create and stage a 3D environmental scene and highlight both my modeling and texturing skills as well as design an interactable UI Menu. I focused on utilizing many of Unreal's tools and functions to incorporate more shaders and interactivity in the menus. The menu created is fully functional and showcased in real-time in the demo video.

I would also like to give some extra appreciation to my friend Christos Kalanidis for creating the music used in this project. (Music can be found here)

I designed four menus for this project. To the right are all the sprites used in creating the Nintendo screen UI. The only exceptions are the two larger paper sprites and about three alpha sprites needed for the button shaders.

Below are some of the breakdowns of the Nintendo DS model, textures, and shaders. As well as some of the environmental props, and a scene composition progression.

Katana Customization UI

The second project I created is a modular katana, customizable through a UI menu. Although I faced many challenges while creating the UI functionality for the demonstration, I also found it equally fun and rewarding, as I learned a lot during the process. This project spanned five weeks half-time in total.

The following videos showcased the functionality and options of the UI menus I created. As well as some close-ups of the model.

I would like to thank everyone who supported me and provided me with valuable feedback while I was creating my portfolio. Your insights and guidance have been invaluable, and I am truly grateful for your help. Thank you so much for being a part of this journey with me.
