2D Animation - Kym Yambot

by Kymyambot on 1 Jun 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

I'm showcasing here a compilation of my most recent 2D animation projects, ranging from quadruped walk cycles to character monologues. The majority of my work is inspired by my own experiences, incorporating elements of fantasy and infused with my Filipino culture.

JASKIER MONOLOGUE

I drew inspiration for my 2D animation project from the live-action character of Jaskier in The Witcher. I find his character to be outgoing, lively, and humorous, and I thought it would be quite interesting to bring him to life in the 2D animated world.

To begin my project, I searched for a video clip of him delivering an interesting dialogue. Once I found the right clip, I listened to it multiple times to visualize the character's acting. With a few ideas in mind, I recorded a video of myself acting out the chosen line. Using the video and my imagination, I created rough key poses for my character. Additionally, I made a final drawing of my animated version of Jaskier.

The next step is to create a rough animation of the finalized key poses. Once I am satisfied with the rough animation, I proceed to cleaning it up and adding color. After that, I move on to designing the background layout. When coloring the background, I ensure that it enhances the prominence of my main character. As Jaskier generally has cooler tones, I opt for a warmer background to create contrast.

My initial background layout sketch had the house's door on the left side of the scene, but later on, I decided to move it to the right side as it works better with the positioning of my character.

YLANG-YLANG BIPED RUN

One of my favorite 2D animation projects is the biped run of my character, Yla. Her character draws inspiration from a fragrant flower from my home country, the Philippines, known as Ylang-ylang. On the other hand, the background is inspired by the historic town of Vigan in northern Philippines.

To add the final touches to my biped run, I included a puddle on the pavement and scattered fallen petals along the way. This way, as the character runs, I can incorporate a splash effect when she passes through the puddle, and the running motion will cause the petals to be blown away.

MILKY (QUADRUPED WALK CYCLE)

I had many pets growing up, like cats, dogs, and even a goat. So, it was really exciting for me to animate a quadruped walk cycle. I took inspiration from my own dog, Milky, as she walks through the forests of my hometown, Baguio.

I also considered animating an endangered species from my country called the Tamaraw. However, I have decided to work on my dog, Milky, for now. I made rough sketches of the Tamaraw before making my final decision.

I made some thumbnails of the key poses for the walk cycle before working on the rough animation of my dog character.

Lastly, I painted the background layout for my dog walk scene, drawing inspiration from the lush and forested surroundings of my hometown.
