Project progression :

Creating the map

After [Farm], I chose to recreate Nuketown Zombies because it was a map I enjoyed a lot when playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. However, I felt it was a missed opportunity that the map didn't have any quests/secrets, considering its significance in the Zombies mode storyline.

To start the project, I initially planned to make a remake rather than a remaster. I wanted to expand the potential of the map while keeping its basic gameplay intact.

Therefore, my goals were to remake Nuketown with its original architecture but add additional playable areas and a quest/secret that would be in line with the game's story.

To begin, I analyzed the map's architecture and collected various images such as minimaps to have reference points in the map editor. With the documentation provided by the developers, indicating the game's standard scales, and some exported assets from the original map, I was able to create a fairly accurate and faithful blockout of the map.

Map blockout:

Modeling:

Reproducing buildings based on visual estimation and adapting them to the game's standard scale. I also worked on the terrain.

Level Design:

Despite being a remaster, I added additional level design while preserving the original layout. The idea was to expand the map while respecting its core structure.

Programming:

This was my first real experience with coding, and I decided to delve deeper into the world of programming through this project. Nuketown had various interesting gameplay elements to program. With community tools, I exported the scripts from the Black Ops 2 version to include them in Black Ops 3. Although the language was similar, it required manual code conversion. I had to study all the files, correct the differences, and adapt them. After a few weeks, all the scripts were imported, and I acquired a good understanding of the code logic.

To make this remaster more interesting, I wanted to incorporate options that allowed players to customize their experience. This customization allowed them to achieve the game feel of Black Ops 3 while also providing the option to experience the game feel of Black Ops 2, including the HUD, game design, weapons, sounds, etc.

Additionally, there was the possibility to play with 8 players, a first in custom zombies at that time, along with the addition of bots. This allowed players to experience this feature even when playing solo.

These additional mechanics later became the foundation for the [Zombies Experience] project.

New version: Nuketown Aftermath:

Once the remastered version was completed, I began working on the Aftermath version, which was intended to be five times larger than the original, featuring new houses to explore and a bunker.

Next screenshots are from a work in progress version of Nuketown Aftermath.

 CONCLUSION

💡 Unfortunately, the project will not progress further due to time constraints. To avoid keeping the community waiting, I released the remaster version.
