Rafiul Alam - 3D Environment Art

by rafiul on 31 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

Working on my skills as a 3D environment artist for games; developing my technical and creative skills with each project I complete. Displayed are some of my latest projects presenting those skills.

Big Ben Modular Kit

I created a 31 piece modular kit of the Big Ben for this Plague Tale: Requiem inspired game level. This kit developed my skills of trim sheets, tiling textures and creating materials.

The kit itself is divided into two parts; the clock tower and the secondary building. Each Piece makes use of the same brick material which I had created in Substance Designer, as well as two trim sheets made in ZBrush.

Below is an image displaying the kit in a scene as a background piece.

Trim Sheets

These are trim sheets I sculpted on ZBrush for the kit. I did this to prevent the building from looking too flat and basic as the actual Big Ben is heavily detailed with ornamental sculpted details. However, as this would be a background piece, I did not want to add too much detail to save time in the project.

Here are some chimneys I created as an addition to the housing kits; both were individually textured on Substance Painter using brick materials I had created in Designer.

Materials

Here are some brick and tile materials I created for the kit on Substance Designer. This was my first time using Substance Designer to create tiling materials and I can certainly say that it is a software I will be using a lot in the future.

Stone Ruins Modular Kit

This was a different project where I tasked myself with creating a stone ruins modular kit based on A Plague Tale: Requiem. This was a 4 week module in which I challenged myself with using ZBrush for the majority of the assets; creating organic shapes and ornamental details.

I used vertex blending in Unreal to create moss details as well as crack damages to the rocks which enhanced the overall ruined aesthetic I was aiming to replicate.

Batman Arkham Knight Chinatown Diorama

This was a diorama project lasting around 7 weeks. This was the first time I was given the freedom to create something inspired by my own ideas. This diorama's art style is inspired by Batman Arkham Knight and I intended to create an environment similar to the Chinatown level found in the game.

I used the Unreal Lumen system for the lighting; creating a night time scene which was still full of life which I accomplished through the soft point lights emitted by the lanterns and candles.

I also attempted some VFX through creating rain in the Unreal Niagara particle system.
