Daniel Tolland 2023 Honours Project & Portfolio

Willowcrest Cottage is an environment set in a post-apocalyptic Britain. This cottage has been abandoned for several years but was once a home and safe shelter to many. Created for my Honours project, I focussed on environmental storytelling and how to tell a compelling visual narrative without having to say a word. 

The biggest goal for this project was to learn about stylised art. I’ve admired this style for so long but I’ve never had many opportunities to experiment with this art style. This environment was based on a piece of concept art by Jenny Mati for Umeshu Lovers.

Several wooden props that I created, focussing on my modelling and sculpting skills. The low poly versions were worked on inside Maya and then imported into ZBrush to create the high poly with sculpted wooden texture and damage. Inside ZBrush, I used wood alphas to achieve the wood appearance. Each asset was then textured in Substance 3D Painter.
