Hi! This is my environment design assignment where I had the opportunity to explore 3D modeling and paint-over techniques for the first time. I invested a lot of effort and thought into this artwork, and it has become one of my personal favorites!

“Colorful Medieval”

Hi! I am glad to share this environment design I did for my assignment.

I wanted to present a different style of medieval architecture, with a touch of enchantment and mystery. Since it was my first time doing 3D modeling and paint over, I faced several challenges along the way. Fortunately, the result is something I am very satisfied with.

The entire modeling was done using Sketchup, and the rendering was achieved in Vray. In Photoshop, I combined photo-bashing and paint-over techniques to create the final outcome.

Medieval architecture design

Inspired by genuine medieval architecture, I infused my personal touch into the design. I enjoy buildings with strong contrasting shapes, I dedicated significant effort to the architectural design aspect.
In the end, I decided to choose the one in the middle for modeling.

Modeling and Composition

After modeling in Sketchup, I adjusted the angles to compose the suitable framing.

In terms of the environmental composition, I chose to highlight the central building by incorporating the sky and surrounding trees. This approach helps showcase the overall structure and unique features of the architecture.

Photo-bashing and Paint-Over

In photo-bashing, I tried to select simple elements as much as possible to make coloring easier during the paint-over process.
Since the focus of this piece was on the buildings, during the paint-over stage, I primarily worked on creating textures for the architecture and enhancing vibrancy in the shadow areas.

Final Touch-up

In the final touch-up stage, the initial color tones leaned toward warm color.
However, with guidance from the lecturer, I added some cooler colors to achieve a balanced composition and create a more satisfying overall atmosphere.
