Character and Creature Design Project

⸱The Outsiders of the Norse⸱

The tale of an outcasted valkyrie, a visitor from the star beyond and a dragon exiled by the Gods embarked on a journey to uncover themselves their places in the vast expanse of the World Tree, Yggdrasil.

This is a personal project I have made for the final year of my school. The project is mainly inspired by Norse mythology, with my loves for creatures, animal, monster and alien sprinkled throughout.

The first character I have made is a valkyrie that is abandoned by her parents because of her naked featherless wings, fearing that her appearance is a sign of ill omen for their family. Though under the care of a kind lady, she grew up to become a formidable fighter protecting her village, earning respect from the others.

Below is an initial exploration of the design for her clothing and armor. As well as her hairstyle and her base body.

Eventually I cleaned up three of the designs, explored the shape of the pseudo-wing energy shield, as well as added some explanation of the equipment that she carries.

The second character I have made is an alien who emerged from a meteor and suffers from amnesia. Here in the village, he try to learn to live by the culture of the locals despite being feared and attacked by them at first. Eventually he picked up the art of shaman and use his abilities to help with the others.

The initial design below is where I explore the silhouette and the thumbnail of the alien

Then, I select a few design and further refining them, taking references ranging from human skeleton and muscles, to insects and trees.

The final character is a dragon that have been exiled by the Aesir God, now resides in a cave. The valkyrie and the alien eventually tamed the beast and it helps the duo to carry loads while travelling, sharing its knowledge on the nature of the world around them.

Below are various sketches where i explored the design based on how the dragon would evolved and adapt to the cavernous environment, such as having vestigial wings, ways of consuming crystal or minerals as parts of their diets, giant claws to dig through the cave and so on.

Brakyuros - The Tyrant of the Trench

A small little project where I designed a deep sea kaiju inspired by various crustaceans.

Here is the illustration I have made for the kaiju. Giving the monster a sense a scales by having it emerging from the sea and attacking a ship.

I started off by making thumbnail for the lighting and added in the base colour before moving to rendering

Chrono Trigger x Dark Soul Remake - Heckran 

Remake of an enemy from Chrono Trigger in the style of Dark Soul.  I tried exaggerating the features of Heckran based on it's pixel art and sprite, and added various grotesque feature afterwards

Here are two of my creature related works that I did for RJ Palmer contest.

⸱Cthulhu Redesign⸱

The contest was hosted by RJ Palmer. For the redesign of my Cthulhu, I wanted to go for a more lanky and ethereal kind of Cthulhu where it would floats and glides, wandering above the ruins of R'lyeh. 

Clams and various cephalopods like cirrate octopus and blanket octopus are the main idea for my redesign of Cthulhu

⸱Barnijira⸱

An eldritch biological weapon engineered by the alien to fend off Godzilla before invading earth.

A kaiju I designed and illustrated based on the contest prompt which is to make a kaiju that rivals Godzilla. The main inspiration for the design came from barnacles.
