Alice In Wonderland Reimagined

This is an ongoing project I am working on at the Savannah College of Art and Design of a reimagined story of Alice in Wonderland. What started as a class assignment has turned into a personal project. I love the exploration and recreation of the characters to fit in their noir detective-esque setting.

In my Illustration Concepts and Composition class at SCAD, I had to pitch a story, and design the characters, to fit my reimagining of Alice in Wonderland. In my story, Alice is a first-time private detective hired by a femme fatale named Mrs. Love, who is searching for a former hacker turned informant called the White Rabbit. Alice's job is to discover where the White Rabbit has disappeared and who was behind it. As Alice investigates her leads and gathers clues, she is introduced to many strange characters and sees the dark underbelly of Wonderland firsthand.

My deliverables for this spanned two assignments where I submitted two main illustrations of two key events in my story, two spot illustrations, and two illuminated letters. In addition, I researched the characters and created basic model sheets for Alice, the Cheshire Cat, Queen of Hearts, and the Mad Hatter, thumbnailed, and created value and color comps.

In my first main illustration scene, Alice investigates her leads with the help of the sly Cheshire Cat, who has become her companion on her journey for the truth. The spot is that of Mrs. Love, aka Queen of Hearts, with the letter featuring the police force of Wonderland, the Twiddles.

In my second main illustration scene, Alice and the Cheshire Cat are in a battle against the corrupted Twiddles controlled by the wicked Mad Hatter. They use their signal jammer guns to deactivate the robots. Unfortunately, where one falls, two rise in their place. The spot is the Mad Hatter casually watching the fight, with the letter featuring Mrs. Love's weapon of choice, a pair of sabres.

At critique, the professor stated that the robot helmets were not threatening enough and that the radial gradient for the floor was distracting. It was suggested that I use a pattern for the floor. So I changed the hats to be reminiscent of World War I Prussian Army pickelhaube helmet and created a pattern for the floor.

In my Illustration Markets class, I revisited my Alice in Wonderland story. I aimed to redesign the characters using better shape language with character silhouettes and create more detailed model sheets with expression charts to start fleshing out Alice and the other characters. One day I intend to make a webtoon of the reimagined story of Alice in Wonderland.

I wanted to call back to the original Disney animated Alice in Wonderland color scheme for the characters. I used the Adobe Capture app to achieve this. I also wanted to call back to Alice's dress, hence the change of her outfit from a pants vest suit to a high-waisted skirt and sweater vest.
