Digital clothing collection "Other Matter"

My name is Sally. I have a solid foundation in clothing pattern cutting. During my studies at the Art Academy of Latvia, I made the exciting decision to create a digital fashion collection for my master's thesis.  The idea of blending my expertise in pattern cutting with digital technologies fascinated me. 

The collection bears the name "Other Matter". In this context, Matter refers to any physical substance that has mass and occupies space. The name of the collection emerged from the realization that amidst the pandemic, the digital realm transformed into a multifunctional space—a workplace, a marketplace, a communication platform, and an avenue for entertainment. For a brief moment, this virtual area became more tangible than the physical environment surrounding us. The inspiration for the collection is outer space, as space encompasses matter that is intangible and cannot be physically touch.

Outer space is the relatively empty regions of the universe outside the atmospheres of astronomical objects. In a similar vein, digital space can be likened to outer space, as it can be characterized as an environment where individuals exist in a weightless state, free from resistance and the gravitational forces exerted by planets. 

This is the exact emotion I sought to evoke with the collection. 

The color palette for the collection was selected, drawing inspiration from space photographs, textures, and fabric patterns derived from various planet surfaces, as well as silhouettes, volumes, and accessories inspired by astronaut suits.

I thoroughly relished the creative process. Leveraging my expertise in clothing pattern cutting to directly create garments and accessories within a 3D software, bypassing the need for traditional sketches. Through the meticulous construction of models and careful selection of materials, textures, and colors, I successfully achieved the desired outcome I envisioned.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my family for their unwavering support throughout my journey. I am also deeply grateful to the Art Academy of Latvia for providing me with the opportunity to pursue my creative endeavors. Additionally, I extend my thanks to the Latvian State Culture Capital Foundation for their financial support.
