Distorted Society

by lizziesarullo on 31 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

Distorted society faces the struggles of body dysmorphia through silhouettes in fashion. It is dependent on how social media effects viewers into thinking they must look like "the ideal body type". My collection goes against these impossible body standards.

DISTORTED SOCIETY

ELIZABETH SARULLO SENIOR THESIS

This collection relates to the struggle of dealing with body dysmorphia.

Distorted Society dives into social media consumption and the effects of the "ideal body type" being put on a pedestal through magazines, fashion, and media.

My garments are designed to go against the standards we are expected to look like.

I AM THE MUSE

My thesis concept was developed based on my own struggles I've dealt with in my life and being able to see the effects of how people treat you based on the way that you look. I dived into the idea of feminism and social media consumption as well as the mental health effects that people have from these impossible body standards.

SKETCHBOOK PROCESS

Using different draping techniques and silhouette ideations through collaging, I was able to identify different ways to accentuate the body.

I wanted to change this negative connotation of expectations into a new representation of body types in the form of clothing.

THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS INTO CLO3D

FABRIC SWATCHES

Using a textile manipulation, I created distorted line work out of a mixture of screen printing ink and jacquard puff paint and then used a tool to comb into the paint and show the fabric underneath.

The second textile manipulation I did was using a gel medium to transfer printed paper onto fabric. This stiffened the sections of fabric with the transfer on it. CLO allowed me to use placement graphics to see where the best fit was for the text and what would have to biggest impact.

CLO LINE UP

Using CLO, I was able to strengthen certain areas of the garments where I added shapes that would have buckram in it to hold itself in place. I was then able to identify exactly where I wanted to place my graphics on the garments and being able to print that from the pattern layout helped to mark it out in final fabric.

EDITORIAL PHOTOSHOOT

The magazine mockup was meant to present these new body shapes through our media and show off the impossible standards we are held to on a daily basis.

It shows the concept of mirrors, glass, and fashion distorting our bodies and finally getting recognition for being able to look different and still be beautiful and confident.

Distorted Society was created to defy the beauty standards of the media.
