Arijus Riskus - Concept Art 2023

I'm Arijus, and I'm about to graduate from my last year of university! Here are two of my projects, one experimental and one more traditional, with the former being my final year project in which I tried my hand at fleshing out a game. Enjoy!

Round of applause for our sponsors

Spark Bulwark is a concept for for 3rd person sci-fi shooter set on a gas giant planet with flying creatures and vehicles everywhere, with energy being a rare commodity and most of the atmosphere being toxic and sulphuric.

The starting island belongs to a small group of people who also make it their base of operations to carry out missions, travelling with the entire island.

The main character along with the others have to wear these liquid glass laden suits and backpacks that regenerate their shells and keep them alive in toxic high altitudes.

The biggest and most common predator on the planet, these worm-like creatures  swim in the thicket of sulphuric clouds high in the planet's atmosphere, and dive out to catch their prey, while using their wings to glide back up to their habitat.

A piece done almost entirely in 3D, and one entirely painted in 2D. To make my 3D pieces come to life as quick as possible, I enlist many modelling shortcuts and techniques as well as VR sculpting programs over traditional ones for certain things like the large robot, letting me make these highly detailed models and environments from scratch in hours if not days.

METALWORLD is my final year worldbuilding project and the concept of a 2.5D action platformer game set on a distant planet in the far future, where you battle huge machines in a desert and find yourself in the middle of nowhere in a town, fighting to explore and discover the world. Despite being my main project it's very experimental and not as traditional in the concept art sense although just as functional at showcasing the concepts of a game.

I chose the first screen of the "game" to make a fully painted over and projected 3D setpiece out of, painting on the 3D models and making others out of drawn textures.

One of the many resting sites for the giants of old that used to traverse the planet, now being condemned to these stone pillars or the depths of the dunes. Some who survived longer left pieces of themselves.

One of the few but larger towns in the vast desert, the player will come here to upgrade gameplay functions and talk to everyone. I took necessary shortcuts on this whole set-piece to make it come to life in a reasonable time frame, making quite a lot out of a big flat 2D drawing of the town, showcasing multiple functions within the "game".

A tangent in the project, albeit one that answers some more questions to round the entire starting area off nicely, with a short video demonstrating how the player can control and use the megastructure in the sky to their advantage.

Project poster

I made this poster outside of the project (hence the juxtaposition of styles) to fully showcase my quick 3D workflow and to make something a lot more refined with all the tool's I've acquired throughout the past year. I used a large toolset that i've been learning in Blender and VR sculpting to make the huge robot sculpt in quick time.

One last thank you to friends and family and my lecturers for my time at university! Although my main project might be untraditional in the concept art sense, I still love this area of work and hope to better myself along anyone else who wants to make games.
