Cadet & Dragon Stylized projects

Michal Patton
by MichalPatton on 30 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

This past year I focused on exploring painterly looks with my work. It's been so much fun, and I'm excited to keep experimenting! Both projects are rendered in real time using Unreal Engine 5.

This first project was an exploration in stylized character look dev. This is based on a painting by Adrian Bush (https://www.instagram.com/plunteere/?hl=en)

I wanted to create something painterly in real time that works in any lighting condition. So a lot of my time in Unreal was experimenting with this post process shader. That was lots of fun!

I had so much fun participating in the Artstation Challenge last year! Dragon's Rise: Forgotten Realms was already a cool theme, but then I found an amazing concept by Alejandro Pacheco and was inspired to experiment with a unique painterly look. I created a feather shader to look like  a paint stroke that could blend in well with my existing base color, but also have the softness of real feathers.

This character was created entirely within the 49 day challenge period. Thank you to all my friends and peers who gave me feedback and help!
