Kelly Knowd - A Preview

by KellyKnowd on 30 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

Hi, I'm Kelly! I'm a first year BFA student at Gnomon School Of Visual Effects. Let's take a quick look into a couple fun projects I have to share ranging from personal art, to school oriented projects.

Proznosc

This is my midterm for my Intro To Maya class, we were tasked with recreating a room of our choice 1 to 1. I knew I wanted to make something colorful and fun, so when I saw Proznosc, a polish club, I had to make it. I had fun with this project and I learned a lot about Vray, modeling, and lighting in Maya.

Everything was set up and modeled in Maya, rendered with vray, and textured with a mix of vray materials, photoshop, and substance painter. I also briefly used Zbrush for sculpting a couple of objects which was very new to me and a fun experience.

The Greenhouse

This is a personal project I created with the intention of adding it to my portfolio submission for Gnomon. I also had learning goals with this project which was to familiarize myself with Maya more, learn how to model foliage, and how to use texture atlases. This was honestly such a fun and stress-free project for me, and my love for making foliage started with this small piece.

The greenhouse structure and props were modeled in Maya, textured in Substance Painter, and assembled and rendered in Unreal Engine 5. Since this project, I have discovered SpeedTree and have been learning it in my free time outside of classes and I find it so convenient and fun to work with.

Sultan's Bazaar

Sultan's Bazaar is another personal project I made for my Gnomon admission portfolio. At the time, I was playing a game called Witch It and was inspired by the art. It has a pixelated, stylized art style that I love so much. From up close the textures are pixelated, but from afar you can make out what the textures are.  This was another project where my goal was to keep working in Maya to familiarize myself, and to learn more about trim sheets.

My process was very similar to the Greenhouse project. I modeled the structures and props in maya using tileable trim sheets I hand drew in photoshop then pixelated. I then assembled and rendered the scene in Unreal Engine 5. I'm still really happy with how this turned out, it is a simple scene, but I was able to recreate the style and concept of what I had in my head well. Just another small and fun project that I look back on fondly.

Stay Tuned-

Thank you for checking out my first Rookies submission! We all start somewhere, and I look forward to growing my 3D knowledge and showing my progress next year! Till then, you can find additional art on my ArtStation, along with connecting with me on Linkedin.
