The Hermit Crab

It was a school project made this year at #ESMA. The goal was to learn modelisation, retopology, texturing, and lighting through an organic topic.

I chosed to remake a realistic hermit crab because I love the ocean, the colors and the shapes of its fauna and flora.

1st and 2nd images : here are some different lightings of the hermit crab with its environment.
3rd image : a version of the sculpt 2 of the environment and the animal, without the textures.

For this project, I used Autodesk Maya, Mudbox, Photoshop and Renderman.

This was my references before starting the project, what I wanted it to look like at the end.

The Mad Hatter's Shop

Here is the story behind these two images :

During the Victorian era, in a small village in the British countryside, there is a strange hat shop run by the Mad Hatter from the famous tale Alice in Wonderland.

Our thirty-year-old hatter has a special characteristic that makes him unique: he is an Asperger. As a result, he has difficulty in establishing fluid contact with his customers and in feeling atmospheres... On the other hand, he has a very rich inner world and an obsession for hats, which he loves to decorate in warm, bright colours.

Despite his difficulty in being sociable, he is a very talented artist who is too often misunderstood.

In the first image, I want us to feel like we are entering his shop for the first time. We suddenly feel the eccentricity and the crazy talent of this character. We should be bewildered, attracted by his creations, to the point of wondering if we're in a dream.

In the second image, the Hatter has left, and the shop is abandoned. We feel the emptiness and we'd like to see the shop from the first image again, the surreal and the madness.

References for the 1st shot :

1st screencap : Helter Skelter, Mika Ninagawa, 2012.

I inspired myself from this shot to create the ligthing of my first image.  I wanted to show the disorder, energy, desire and passion that emanate from this shop, and to accentuate its bizarre side. The red also draws us in and encourages us to enter the shop. There's no natural lighting, so we don't really know where we are in time, and that leaves us for confusion.

2nd screencap : Amelie, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001

We enter the shop and observe it through the eyes of the customer. That's why the camera is positioned horizontally, slightly overhead. We have a close-up shot : as if we were entering the Hatter's mind and not just a hat shop. There's a monocentric perspective that guides our eye to the centre of the image, where the Hatter's creations are.

3rd screencap : Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Terry Gilliam, 1998

The dutch_angle should give the impression of entering another world, of being in a dream, just as in the movie.

References for the 2nd shot :

1st screencap : Only Lovers Left Alive, Jim Jarmusch, 2012. AD : Marco Bittner Rosser.

I inspired myself from this picture for the framing, as it is a sad and cold atmosphere, the camera steps back. We have a general look at the shop, to feel the emptiness and the lack of life.

2nd screencap : Joker, Todd Phillips, 2019

The blue, diffused color gives this cold mood, just as in John Wick.

3rd screencap : John Wick,  Chad Stahelski, 2014

The lighting is subdued so that the eye is more drawn to the beam of light coming through the  window. This lighting would highlight the area where the hats were previously placed, just as in Joker.

Above, some objects of the room and their loookdev.

Technical information :

Final project of my 1st year of 3D at #ESMA, done in May/June 2022.

Softwares used : Maya, Mudbox, Photoshop, Renderman.

"NO LYS" COVER

Dexa, a friend, wanted a cover of himself. To train myself and to have another personnal project in my portfolio, I did this image. It was a good exercice to learn how I will have to understand the requests of potentially future clients.

His intentions were to be locked in a room, with a blank page. Time was stopped. The light no longer reached him. His thoughts plunged him back into his memories,  he saw the light among the dust.

1st image : The final image I gave him, with compositing and integration in Nuke.

2nd image : The last render I extracted from Maya, rendered with Renderman.

3rd image : A WIP with a volume box, rendered with Renderman.

4thimage : Grey modelisation of the room, done in Maya, Mudbox.
