The Black Hole ―3D Animated Short Film

Created by Thea Li & Pinjia Chen
          Directed by Thea Li

I collaborated with my thesis partner to produce a thesis short film at the School of Visual Arts in 2023. It's an original story that we brought to life, and we were fortunate to receive invaluable support from our friends and professors throughout the process.

Logline.

In the depths of his subconscious mind, a soldier embarks on a psychological journey, grappling with the imminent war and delving into the transformative shifts in his perspective on confronting mortality.

Synopsis.

Within the soldier's psyche, he confronts both the subjective consciousness of his battle on the battlefield and the inner child residing in his subconscious mind, engaged in an eternal play and struggle against mortality. His psychological odyssey begins with uncertainty, gradually evolving into a relentless fight against fear, culminating in a serene acceptance of death.

                                                                                                           two characters.

                                                                                                                            two scenes.

Concept of the Black Hole.

“We always imagine eternity as something beyond our conception, something vast, vast! But why must it be vast? Instead of all that, what if it's one little room, like a bath house in the country, black and grimy and spiders in every corner. and that's all eternity is? I sometimes fancy it like that.”

― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment

 Death.

I used to think of death as a very large, vast, distant concept, but when you really face it, when it appears before you, it is tangible, it is not just a powerful irretrievable force, it may be...... just a hole, that is, a hole.

The Lighting.

As a lighting artist myself, I had already begun contemplating the overall color palette and lighting transitions right from the inception of the story. I firmly believe that lighting plays a pivotal role in portraying the characters' varying psychological states throughout different stages. To convey initial curiosity and innocence, I opted for a warm color scheme that exuded both vitality and mystery. As the story delves into the harsh reality of the battlefield, I incorporated the timeless blue-green hues, symbolizing an encroaching sense of despair. The flickering and unsteady lights in the background mirror the internal conflicts faced by the characters and their battle against death.
