Rotoscoping Compositing

All the footages from my portfolio was shot by me. The Compositing was done in After Effects. I did the best I could to achieve in the end the lowest level of compromise.

Round of applause for our sponsors

I'm an independent artist from Republic of Moldova. I studied movie directing.

Trying not to call myself a movie director, at least not until I have filmed my first full length movie, at least not until I have reached the position where I would be able to pay all the very good people working for me.

The short movies I made in the past, I financed them from my own pocket. One day I cached myself mixing the tea for the actors with my left hand and filming with two cameras with my right. Working at the lowest of the low budget I was enforced to learn visual effects - first to cover my mistakes, then, to give a better look to my material and, in the end, to have in the frame the stuff that I can't afford.

I ended up knowing the basics of Compositing techniques, Matte Painting, Set Extensions, Rotoscoping.

I'd like to enhance my skills. For me this is vital. The knowledge I lack will enforce me to rewrite my scripts, to skin them off, before I would be able to film my movies where I am and with the resources I have.

Note: I just come back from Wellington. I was there for three months. I'll make my working visa independently if I will be selected for the internship.

THE LONG ROAD BACK

I used Warp Stabilizer VFX to stabilize the shot. I used the Mask Tool to detach the subject from the background. I tracked the masks manually. To rotoscope the coat I used Extract FX. I can't use Roto Brush Tool - my laptop is not powerful enough for such instruments.

The background was shot by me. The road landscape and the wheat field are stock photos and footages. I also used simple masks to compose them. I played with Feather and Opacity until I got the result I wanted.

LONE STORK

For this particular shot I needed a dramatic sky. The original footage with the stork was shot at low resolution and the sky was too steril. I used the mask tool to cut the stork and I animated it manually.  Also I animated the position of my dramatic sky to create the illusion of flight.

HOME VILLAGE
I wanted to have the entire village in one frame. I took six panoramic photos. I blended them in Photoshop. The sky and the field was composed in After Effects.

WINDMILL

A picture of a real windmill.  The mill was cutted on Photoshop. The sky and the storks was composed in After Effects. I used the Extract FX to separate the stork from their sky background.
In the second shot of the Windmill I animated the mill wheel with Rotation Tool.

STORK'S NEST

I used Warp Stabilizer to stabilize the shot. 3D Camera Tracker to attach the tree to the ground. Keylight 1.2 for greenscreen stork footage.

CHRISTMAS TREE

I used in here the same compositing and rotoscoping techniques as for the rest of the shots. The only difference - I added some snow using an Alpha stock footage.

VIOLENCE
The painter required a reference to draw the punch. I cleaned the scanned drawings in Photoshop and put them together in After Effects.
