Round of applause for our sponsors

Hello! My name is Justin, and I have been learning 3D modeling and texturing for around 10 months.

This project was created for my 3rd term at Think Tank Online. The goal was to create a 3D render of a 2D concept. The concept I chose is called RECAP_ Mobile Mecha Hangar by Jia How on Art Station.

I did the 3D modeling, lighting, and camera placement in Maya. Texturing was done in Mari and Photoshop. Rendering was done in VRay. Other programs used were pureRef and Nuke.

All environment and props was made by me. The humans models were purchased and inserted for the final beauty shot, and was not made by me.

The time frame for the project from start to finish was 14 weeks.

I started by creating a time schedule for the project, after which I started recreating a camera that matches the concept in Maya, so I can block out the assets.

Next step was to model. One of the most challenging parts was to interpret 2D drawings into shapes that would make physical sense in 3D. My goal was to keep the feel from the 2D concept, and also add realistic details to them in 3D.

I consulted many references in order to create many mechanical parts and joints, both big and small, to make the mech.

Same level of detail was used to create the rest of the environment. For example for the roof, I created a network of pipes/plates/bolts/and metal beams to recreate the same feel the 2D concept had.

After the modeling stage, I moved onto texturing.

For the environment, I went for a sci-fi military look. I referenced existing military bases, such as an aircraft carrier.

After the environment, I went to texture the main prop, which was the mech. I used Mari to create diffuse, bump, and roughness maps. I also created custom materials in VRay to better capture the metallic nature of the materials.

Custom VRay materials:

The combination of everything created the final render.

All in all, I learned a ton from this project and am looking forward to creating bigger and better projects in the future. Thank you for your time!
