Hard Surface Assets & Level Decoration

Felicia Larsson
by FeliciaLarsson on 28 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

It has only been three years since I first ever touched a 3D modelling software, two since I ever first used Unreal Engine or Substance Painter. After enrolling at Howest Digital Arts and Entertainment I have learnt an incredible amount, and I am incredibly excited to learn more by both myself and from other people.

Hard Surface Assets

Binoculars

Reference: Humvee 10x50 Field Binoculars

The binoculars are one of my favourites, and the one I am most proud of, so far. A sizeable chunk of time that I spent on this was used looking up reference and zooming in on details while watching review videos for these specific binoculars, though I think all the attention to detail was worth it.

Handheld Radio

Reference: ICOM IC-A14 Handheld Radio

The handheld radio is one of the more complicated assets I've made. What at first seemed like just a box with some buttons and a display, proved to be a little tricky, especially when it came to making the high-poly for the bake. For this one I am also very proud of the texturing, having worked a lot on localising dirt and grease, and making the screen look nice while the model itself remained flat.

Scissors

These scissors are modelled from an actual pair of scissors that I own. They're a smaller pair, about the size of my hand, and they were given to me by my dad. I even think he was given them by his parents, from the start. It was a fun experience creating these and texturing in all the little details I know so well.

Level Building

Space Station

The space station was my first experience with making a playable level from start to finish, simple as it was, and I had to think a lot about both player experience, nice lighting, and effecient use of modular assets.

Archviz

Reference from IKEA: A living room with a designer's touch

This was a great experience in baking lighting in Unreal Engine, as well as doing all that extra to make a 3D rendered image look like it is not 3D rendered at all, and much more like a real life photo.

Thank you for your time and attention

I have only high hopes for what I will be able to create next.
