2D Game Assets into 3D

I decided to challenge myself by recreating 2D assets from 3D games I truly adored. Trying my best to stick to the same style and spirit of the game.

Turning 2D Game Assets Into 3D

The "Layton Mobile"

The Professor Layton Series is a game very close to my heart. I love the characters, story, art and music. As such, I thought recreating the Layton Mobile would be an interesting challenge, as I haven't created something quite so stylized before.

I had to take a lot of creative liberty with this, originally I was going to recreate the car 1:1 based on the design. But quickly realized that it actually starts to feel uncanny. The original 2D design sits right in the middle of realism and cartoonish. But when trying to recreate that in 3D, it looks quite... bad. I opted to exaggerate the features of the car more to help mitigate this.

Once I did that, the car really came together nicely!

"Unpacking"

This indie game surprised the heck outta me. Such a deeply delightful and relaxing game where all you do is unpack someone else's thing. I thought it would be interesting to try and reimagine the game in 3D, so I tried my hand at recreating the main menu scene with the iconic pig plush that appears throughout the game. I'm happy to say that this piece was a delight to create. It was surprisingly difficult to get the lighting and camera placement EXACTLY like the original 2D scene. But I think I got pretty dang close!
