High Altitude Search and Rescue Spaceship

This is my mentorship project for Think Tank Training Centre. The model was based on the concept art by Colie Wertz:

Special thanks to my mentor Andrew Hodgson who guided me through the project.

I was responsible for modelling, texturing, lookdev and rendering. Andrew Hodgson's kitbash set was used to get details on the spaceship.

The spaceship was modelled considering that the landing gear would be able to retract once it's ready to fly. The model was not rigged, the animation was made through groups in the outliner.

UV's

Since the model is symmetrical the UV's were made on one side of the spaceship and then mirrored to the other side. It's important to plan your camera placement so you can decide on the correct texel density.

Texturing

AO, Curvature, ID maps were baked in Substance Painter, as well as the base of the dirt mask before detailing it in Mari

Mari Texturing

After getting the bakes from Painter I started setting up the node tree in Mari, getting all of my maps ready and started creating masks to build the details.

Scene organization

It's important to have a clean outliner in Maya to be able to locate your assets. Since I knew I was going to animate the groups I had to create a hierarchy to make the animation process easier.

Special thanks

To Andrew Hodgson for his guidance through the project. His feedback and mentoring were crutial for the development of the asset. Another thank you to all of the global mentors and friends at Think Tank for giving me feedback and supporting me in this journey.

This was my first time modelling a vehicle and there were a lot of challenges. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work on this asset, there's a lot of room for improvement but I'm overall happy with the way things turned out.
