My portfolio projects completed throughout the second year of my education on a BA Game Art course at Falmouth University.

Round of applause for our sponsors

My second year consisted of two portfolio projects, alongside a team game. For my first semester, we were tasked with recreating an environment from a film or television show.  I chose Thor Ragnarok's throne room to recreate, and whilst it was quite a challenge, I also learned a massive amount and am fairly happy with the final product. As well as learning essential workflow methods such as trim sheets, I also broadened my knowledge in a range of software.

As well as creating the project itself, I also had to document the entire process through a blog, which is fully published on Wix and can be found at this link: https://fh258403.wixsite.com/ragnarok

Below you can see an additional render of the scene, as well as the asset breakdown in Unreal. We really focused on modularity in this project, which is one of the reasons I picked the scene, as I knew creating a modular environment would be very achievable.

My second semester saw us working on a similar project, except this time with a lot more free reign. We were able to write our own briefs and choose our marking criteria. I decided on a different environment recreation, this time trying to make the cabin from the opening act of the horror card game Inscryption. I chose this as it differed greatly from the hyperrealist architectural style I had done in the last project, as the scene is stylised and pixelated, with a much bigger focus on individual assets, or prop modelling.

As I was partially marked on recreating the visual feel of the environment, I learnt a lot about post-processing, creating vignette and pixelation shaders, as well as pushing my abilities with techniques such as using a CLUT and advanced lighting. I also chose to present some of the assets that I hand-sculpted in Zbrush as separate renders, as shown below.

Overall, this project definitely pushed my skills with software that I was less familiar with, and I am glad to have completed it, as I believe the two scenes combined create a varied portfolio for the year. This second project was also blogged from start to finish, with the link being found here: https://fh258403.wixsite.com/gart250

I am very grateful to the tutors that have assisted me so much during this challenging year, that saw a lot of health struggles and I am very proud to have made it to the end of the year and feel I have shown a lot of growth in my skills. I can't wait for the last year in my degree and what it holds.

Thanks for reading

Faith Hamill :)
