3D Modeling & Texturing Work Flow

by SimiDoria on 19 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

I will show you my creative process for two projects done at Skyup Academy! The first is a texturing work using the ready-made Meet Mat model and choosing a theme. The second is a wip of modeling, texuring and lighting work starting by a reference.

Meet Mat Challenge | La Casa di Carta

Here is my first project in Substance Painter during the Texturing Module at Skyup Academy! Inspired by the Salvador Dalì's mask from the famous tv series La Casa di Carta.

I'll show you my work flow: I used some references to get inspired by the fabric of the tracksuits used in the tv series, and their design. I looked for simplifications of Dalì's mask, starting from a stylized version and looking for ever simpler lines.

On Substance Painter I set the base color, roughness and normal trying to best simulate the fabric.

Finally, for the base, I chose a texture and a color that alluded to the shape of the gold bars, the characters's loot in the Netflix series.

Maya Modeling |  Cupcake WIP

This is a modeling and texturing work in progress; starting by a main reference, I did a first blocking of the basic shapes and then I modeled in detail. Before modeling I searched for other references of each element present in the scene, to better understand the shapes, materials and to better prepare my work.

Once I've created the UV, I started texturing in Substance. For this project, done at Skyup Academy,  I used: Maya, Zbrush and Substance Painter.

Finally, on Maya, I started setting up the lights, using a Dome light with an interior HDRI and other lights positioned as in the reference image.
