Visual effects shots

by tuandingkang on 7 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

My two most recent visual effects shots done over the past one and a half year. Both are composited shots of CGI elements using camera match move tracking.

Visual effects shot of a CGI (Computer-generated imagery) character figurine. The character figurine is a fan art of characters and outfits from the music videos of ずっと真夜中でいいのに。, ZUTOMAYO for short in English, a Japanese rock group led by singer-songwriter, ACAね (ACA-Ne). All assets in this art work are produced by myself.

The character sheet (https://twitter.com/aozukikawasemi/status/1290834373680361472) provided by 革蝉 (Kawasemi) used in the production of this art work. Music videos from ZUTOMAYO's channel (https://www.youtube.com/@ZUTOMAYO) were used as reference as well.

The original footage taken on my phone used in the shot. A checker box cutout has been used to assist with tracking as there were difficulties with camera match move tracking in the other footages taken. The checker box cut out has to be painted out on the areas exposed under the CGI element.

3d assets presentation.

Merged HDR taken during filming for image lighting.

The second visual effects shot, of CGI electronic devices integrated in a footage with real ones. Only the 3d modeling has been taken from online.

UV has been redone on the models, and did realistic procedural texturing and material myself. This shot was inspired as a challenge to myself to blend in CGI elements I created with real ones.

Breakdown of the compositing process of the shot. The devices in the original footage are changing in brightness level, so a animated color grade was used to match the change throughout the shot.

Render showcase of the procedural texturing. Only the areas visible in the shot, the front view is cared for.

The first image is the HDR used for the image lighting initially. The image is first merged from the photos taken on different exposures during filming, leaving the devices in the set. The idea was to replicate the surrounding devices in the lighting for reflections in the CGI elements. This didn't work well as the scale of the devices were all off in the reflections. The top corner features of the Ipad was most prominent, so it had been painted out in hopes of saving the HDR.
The second image is the HDR used for the shot. The HDRs were shot days after the filming, trying to recreate the set, this time without the devices. The colors are slightly mismatched from the HDR taken initially.
The third image is a recreation of the initial HDR with the same set of photos, as the image was saved over after the painting.
