3 Projects from 2023
Here you can see 3 projects i worked on this year at school. (Dystopia, The Necropole, and Space Temple)
Thanks for viewing my Entry for "The Rookies 2023". I am Louis a French student from Lyon, and i'll be presenting 3 works i did this year as a 2nd year Concept Artist Student.
My goal is to be an Environment Concept artist and my biggest inspirations come from the video-game Industry.
I hope you'll enjoy my presentation.
The first step was about finding references that match my ideas and inspires my thumbnails such as neon lighting and futuristic architectures.
On this subject the green thumbnail (second frame) was probably the obvious choice when we talk about key-scene, but since its a very commun shot in the cinema industry, i discused with my teacher and chose to work on the orange-brownish frame (third frame) that i thought was a bit more interesting.
This subject was an introduction to 3D, and we were advised to use "Blender" as a 3D modeling software, to produce the basis of the final image. Learning Blender, I designed basic shaped futuristic building, and set multiple lights that give a kind of futuristic look to the city.
I then set a camera that i could adjust before rendering my basis that i'll use to paint over.
Once I finished rendering on Blender, I imported the file on Photoshop and started looking for license-free photos online.
I also decided that this exercise was a good one to get better at "Photobashing" since it's a techning I learned about last year, but didn't really knew how to use properly.
On this second project, we had to design an environment and 2 "Face-Front" of a fictionnal serie, or movie we created. We were supposed to give a horror-like mood to the project. I decided to go for a Dark Fantasy universe, like "Dark souls" or many other franchises. I quickly searched for references and ideas.
I decided to inspire the Artistic Direction of this project with many artist that i thought, would give an interesting look. It would be a semi-realistic render, a bit like "Arcane (Fortiche)" art style.
Once i collected enough references to inspire my thumbnails, i quickly tried to sketch ideas of the final product.
After I decided which thumbnail i'd go for, i chose to work on the 2 "Face-Front" buildings i had to do, before working on the final product. Here's the result :
Here's the final picture i designed, and my drawing process :
I decided to choose :
"Space-Opera", "Temple", "Mysterious", "semi-realistic" and added as sub-categories "Fantasy", and "Horror". I used the sub-category words i added as guidelines when hesitating while making the thumbnails.
Once i had some ideas of what concept i would draw, and references that really match the universe i'd like to go for, i quickly sketched thumbnails before working on the final picture.
Here's a view of my process and the finished product.
