Round of applause for our sponsors

CampOut VR is a Camping Simulation that allows players to experience what it is like to camp out in nature and provide users with some helpful tips while camping outside. CampOut VR intends to bring the camping experience to potential players that may not be physically capable of going on an actual camping experience. Players play as a newbie camper, learning essential camping skills while completing tasks like building a campfire, foraging for resources and pitching a tent with the help of their camping journal.

Our game includes features that were included to cater towards users with disabilities as part of our design for inclusivity. These features include, a large bold font for easy viewing, a snap turn functionality that utilises the right controller joystick, and a Material Changing feature that changes the colour of certain items.

The Full Walkthrough Demo is played entirely while sitting down.

On entering the game, players will be in the tutorial scene, where they will have to login/register their account. Afterwards, they can go through the tutorial and choose their Tent and Backpack colours. Players can then end the tutorial which will spawn in a van, and move on to the next scene by interacting with the button on the Van's door. The player will be briefly transported to a loading scene while waiting.

In the main scene, the player will be equipped with their notepad, backpack and tent. The player will find a list of tasks that they must accomplish to finish the game. When each task is completed, the corresponding task in the notepad will be striked out. The first task, to visit the Trading Cabin. At the trading cabin, there is a ranger who requests for the player to bring them 3 fishes in exchange for 6 firewood and a matchbox. There is also a notice board at the Trading Cabin which displays the player score leaderboard, as well as the player's personal score. From there, players can choose to explore the scene and complete tasks.

Along the way, players will come across useful resources such as sticks and leaf piles, which will be useful for building a campfire. Players will also find edible and poisonous mushrooms. There are also 3 Flags around the map. These flags indicate where players can pitch their tent. This allows players to choose the campsite that they like the most.

Eventually, players will reach the Fishing Rental. There, they can speak to the fisherman, who wants 3 edible mushrooms in exchange for a fishing rod and a bucket. After giving the 3 edible mushrooms to the fisherman, players can then go fishing beside the lake using the fishing rod and bucket.

After fishing, players can choose to find a spot to pitch their tent first. Players must place the tent at one of the 3 Orange flags around the scene and interact with the UI that appears to set up their tent. They must then use the Mallet to hammer each tent peg into the ground to secure the tent.

After catching enough fishes, players can head to the Trading Cabin again to trade with the Ranger. After receiving the Firewood and Matchbox, players can return to their campsite to start building their campfire.

After building the campfire, players can light the matchstick by striking it against the matchbox. Players can then use the lit matchstick to light the campfire. With the campfire lit, players can cook their food by placing them on a stick and holding them near the fire. When players consumes the edible mushroom and fish, an eating sound plays. However, if players eat the poisonous mushroom, they will experience a hallucination effect.

After all of the tasks have been completed, players can choose to continue exploring and foraging to earn more points. When they are satisfied, players can then head back to the Van to end the experience. On the end scene, players will see their final leaderboard ranking, as well as their personal score. Players can choose to return to the main menu or quit the experience.

Design for Inclusivity

CampOut includes several inclusive design considerations.

Large and Bold Font

Although CampOut is targeted towards adults, teenagers and children, it is also suitable for people with visual disabilities. CampOut's font size is made intentionally big so that the text is easily readable for those with limitations.

Snap Turn Functionality

CampOut also caters to those with mobility limitations. Players can use the right joystick to rotate around using the snap turn mechanic without having to physically rotate their head or body to look around.

Encouraging Self Expression

Players can also express themselves freely by choosing the colour of their tent and backpack. They can choose 1 out of 3 colours, grey yellow and blue. After confirming their selection, their choice is sent to the database and when the player logs back into the game, the colour will remain the same and they do not have to reselect the colour of the tent.

Through our Usability Testing session, we were able to formulate a simple solution to a problem that we discovered. Since our play-tester has mobility limitations, it is difficult for her to move around while playing the our game. Thus, to address this, we implemented the VR Keyboard, as well as the snap turn mechanic. This allowed the final game to be played entirely while sitting down.

Scoring System

Our scoring system awards 2 points per fish caught, 1 point per edible mushroom collected, 1 point per stick collected, 1 point per fish cooked and 1 point per edible mushroom cooked. The scoring system also penalises players for collecting poisonous mushrooms, -1 point per poisonous mushroom collected, and -1 point per poisonous mushroom cooked.
