Wall-E Modelling / Surfacing in a VFX way

Still such a great film. One of the great things about Wall-E is, that the story came true somehow. The world gets destroyed by trash, and all humans are only looking at their smartphones, instead of looking at the ground they are walking on. Fun Fact: Wall-E Stands for "Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth class"

Wall-E Modelling / Texturing

Creating a VFX-ready model which looks so simple in form and which is originally created for a Fully animated Film was a huge challenge for me.

Here you can really see the time I spend in Z-Brush and Substance Painter. I've sculpted small edge wear to everything on his body, thinking about a realistic way of where it could be stronger. You can see that on his hands as an example.

Finding a good workflow for modelling peeling paint and rust instead of texturing was a real challenge because it feels like nobody has ever done this. No Tutorials, and no information on the internet. I've found a great workflow using masks in Z-Brush to create it.

The rust / Metal part behind it is just a really simple sculpt using alphas.

Here you can see the final scatter which I've used to scatter small dust, dirt and stones on him. They are barely visible in the end, but that's how real objects work. Small things make a different, even if nobody will notice it.

Thanks a lot for taking the time and reading this article, I really hope you've liked it.
