JULIE ZIDA - FX TD DEMO REEL

by Juliezida on 23 Apr 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

My name is Julie Zida. I like taking up new shot-specific challenges requiring both artistic and Houdini technical specific skills such as: vellum, particles, pyro, rigid bodies, fluid, vex scripting, mantra and solaris, to create believable natural and magical phenomena based on references.

HELLO EVERYONE!

This demo reel shows a variety of effects works such as: pyro, rigid bodies, particles, vellum and procedural modeling, combined with some look development, that reflect physical dynamics of natural and magical phenomena.

PROCEDURAL FERRIS WHEEL SURROUNDED BY PLANTS MODELING

This is a procedural ferris wheel surrounded by plants that I have modeled in Houdini based on a picture which has been taken in Lake Shawn amusement park in US by a photographer.

The idea of this project was not just to make a 3D version of this picture, but also to generate in Houdini two systems: one capable to generate a ferris wheel with the desired amount of seats and another one capable to generate different plants shape. To get an aesthetic visual aspect, the texturing has been done in Photoshop, the shading, the lighting and the rendering in Mantra and the compositing in Nuke.

BUILDING DEMOLITION SIMULATION

This building demolition breakdown is based on a real building which has been destroyed in US.

To achieve this shot, I procedurally modeled the building based on several pictures. Then, for each part of this building, I customized: rigid bodies setup (based on custom fractures and constraints), pyro and particles setup (involving different forces to get the right smoke and debris motion), and I generated some cloth simulations with vellum setup. It was interesting to experiment, combine all those technics and figure out different solutions to optimize a large shot like this one. To get an aesthetic visual aspect, the texturing has been done in Photoshop, the shading, the lighting and the rendering in Karma in Solaris and the compositing in Nuke.

GHOSTS COMING OUT OF THE WALLS SIMULATIONS

Those simulations of ghosts coming out of the walls are based on The new mutants movie.

It was a great opportunity to explore other Houdini components like: rigging and animation and to combine them with vellum effects to get dynamic shots. The texturing, the shading, the lighting and the rendering have been done in Karma in Solaris and the compositing in Nuke.

SHOCKWAVE SIMULATION

This shockwave simulation breakdown is part of a group project I was involved and shows the 3D parts I was in charge. To help me to simulate this shockwave and get the right motion, I was inspired by an archive footage.

The idea was to simulate a wave of compressed air (using several pyro systems) from the punch of the actor on the ground, which would have pushed back the other characters facing him and the leaves on the ground. The texturing, the shading, the lighting and the rendering have been done in Karma in Solaris and the compositing in Nuke by Cyprien Huet.

PARTICLES PORTRAIT SHINING

The idea of simulating a portrait through a jar made with glass caught my attention and my desire to reproduce one of the shots from the The BFG movie.

To achieve this shot, I modeled the jar and the portrait and then I combined custom particles, pyro and vellum setup. The look development of this shot involving: shading, lighting and rendering in Karma in Solaris and the compositing  in Nuke were challenging and interesting.
