Fantasy projects

by OscarMolin on 31 May 2023 for Rookie Awards 2023

Here are some of my projects that I've been working on for a while now. I love creating stylized fantasy art and have a passion for props and architecture. Hope you all enjoy!

The Hunter's carriage was a really fun project that I've been working with back and forth during an extended time period. I wanted to practice vehicle design and rendering so I came up with the idea to create a dark fantasy carriage that belongs to a roaming monster hunter. However once I started designing I began getting more and more ideas of how the world around the carriage works, what the hunters' motive is and what tools he would use to counter the enormous strength the monsters have. Because of this I got a new challenge, to pack as much storytelling as possible into this vehicle while still maintaining a nice design.

The Fishing Cottage was a smaller project where I wanted to practice shape language, work on thumbnailing architecture and practice layout. Before the project started I gave myself a couple themes just to narrow down the design a bit. I decided to go with a smaller house for a fisherman and I wanted a medieval style half timbered house with a stone foundation.

When I started of with the thumbnailing I also decided that I wanted to place the house on uneven terrain, that way I could add some cool solutions to how the house was built and in turn get a more interesting design. The thumbnailing phase started off with simple orthographic sketches. I decided to add color to the three sketches I liked the most but after a while I didn't feel like any of my sketches had the feeling I was looking for. Therefor I combined them and tried to push the design a bit further. And that was how I came up with the final design.

Once I had rendered the front view I decided to also visualize the backside of the house. I started with a quick blockout in 3D since I already was sure of the design at this stage. Once the 3D blockout was complete, I sketched on top of it and lastly added colours and a quick shadow pass.
