Final Entry

I did it. After many hours of hard work and love.
This is Kristofferson in action.

After texturing I dedicated the time I had left to create an environment that would help to tell Kristofferson's story. For lighting and renders I went into Marmoset Toolbag and worked in building my scene.

Front and Back

And finally here are some extra details!

Thank you for the opportunity and for following along!

Entry Log #5  Texturing

I wanted to go very classic for Kristofferson's look. I wanted it to resemble a Mid Century appliance and I'm quite happy with what I achieved so far. Overall I'd like to keep working in some wear and other minor details but for now I'm feeling good about it.

Texturing was the most important step in my workflow. From the very beginning I knew I wanted to do most of the characterization in Substance Painter, which was my Substance software of choice for this contest. It was very important to me to challenge myself in this area and make use of the power of the tools I had.

Every detail in the backpanel is done using height maps and alphas I designed in Photoshop.

Here are some of the alphas I used to make the name plate and height details:

I wanted to include some kind of modern features to Kristofferson and thats why opted for LED RGB Panels for the ears and cheeks and screens for the eyes. Those were created by alphas and height information within an emissive layer. This are his main communication features and design wise I think it worked.

I had a couple changes in my OG design, the main one being not giving him a mouth but overall I think I achieved what I envisioned in my concept.

Entry Log #4

I though I had uploaded this earlier! Well, this is my final model ready for texturing! I don't have much time to detail it in Zbrush but I'll do it directly in Substance Painter using normal maps.

The UVs are all done as well. Im using a map of 4096px for the entire character and later I'll be using a 2048px one for my background.

Entry Log #3

After many weeks of little time to work on this project I've gotten back on track!

This last week I've been working in Zbrush and Maya to model the body and mechanical parts. The main body I sculpted on Zbrush using booleans and retopologizing in Maya.

I've also tried using nCloth for the first time to create the apron. The detail is subtle but it works perfectly for what I'm going for!

My main challenge right now is taking too long to model each part and I know that if I want to complete this on time for delivery I need to speed up.

Nevertheless! I'm very happy with how it's turning out for now. Here are a couple of snapshots of some details' wireframes.

Currently I'm working on sculpting the head on Zbrush as well as the bottom part and foot. For now I have some placeholders just to get the silhouette right. I'm hoping to update more frequently from now on.

Thank you for reading!

Entry Log #2 | Blockout

I imported my blueprints to Maya and started blocking out my model until I got a basic silouhette I was happy with. From then on is time to start working on my high poly and low poly models.

Entry Log # 1 |

A Robot is a companion with a purpose. They possess helpful tools and/or abilities that helps us make everyday life a little bit easier.  Kristofferson: Cafe Roboserve KR2 is a little bunny-like robot who is created by an all American Diner owner to help waiting on a day to day basis. KR2 rolls all around the place as waitresses in rollerskates once did and is always ready to get customers a fresh cup of coffee. He combines the look and feel of mid century appliances with state of the art hospitality tech for better and faster customer service :)

Original concept.

After multiple sketches I came up with this final concept and turned it into a 2-view blueprint for a better modeling workflow. This is my first time trying this approach so I'll let you know how it goes!

Looking for references was a very time consuming ( I always take days looking for exactly what I'm envisioning). The two main references I had always roaming my mind were Rosie the Robot and WDW Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland. Walt Disney's idea of tomorrow and how robots would shape our lives was a major inspiration for my concept. I also made sure to get some references for all the main features of KR2.

This is my first contest/challenge here in the rookies but for a long time I've been wanting to participate in one. I'm at a point in my journey that I feel somewhat ready and confident in my skills to tackle this project. This is not only a challenge for me but a means to learn and push myself further.
