Reflecting: Collection of Concept Art Works

Four visual development projects/works that I've poured my ponderings into from over the past 2-3 years.

The pandemic times were isolating, and I often found the idea of comfort and loneliness floating around in the space in the back of my mind. Space had to be a pretty lonely place to be. And so, for a sequential art assignment, I asked the question:

What does an astronaut need most in the cold depths of space?

Free Hugs

And because it was still the pandemic after I'd finished that, it seeped into my subconsious in the form of a very, VERY large bird.

Thus was born,

The Bird Arrives

Set in a Singaporean HDB flat of questionable structure, the story follows the lives of several neighbours who suddenly find themselves stuck in their homes due to the sudden and unwelcome arrival of a Giant Bird who has decided to block their only exit and make a nest of their collective flat.

Many thanks to my lecturer who advised me to make this story local.

(I do not take credit for the reference images used)

To pull us back from the pandemic times a bit though, here is an assignment from the "before" times.

Theia and Borp

Based on a story our lecturer spun for us about a girl and her space llama living on a meteor with a space-jam mining industry, I saw chance to explore the environmental effects mining might have in such a small space, and let fly my environmental concerns and experience from the days of (thankfully, gentler) haze a few years back.

We were challenged to design an environment and characters in the style of a certain studio, and I'd gotten Laika's style to try emulating. The studio's rough-ish and textured art style felt right for the theme I'd chosen too.

I drew a lot from the steampunk era in terms of shapes and materials because the fictional era is also often depicted in all its sooty, polluted glory. And the sky was indeed reddish too, much like above, from haze at night the last time I'd seen it in real life.

Below, you will find shy Theia with her gas mask, and her sneaky side-kick, Borp the Space Llama.

And finally, a small piece of background design work to cease your scrolling and send you on your way.

Places hold many stories, and if you look around long enough, they might just tell you theirs...

I've never seen the Ocean

Aaaaaand you've hit the bottom! Thank you so much for stopping by, safe travels!
