This is the main character to a personal IP i have been developing. The setting is historically adjacent fiction, meaning the story includes known historical events but exists in the grey area of folk lore and oral tradition. This project highlights the research and visual exploration of this character concept.

Khunbish-The Last Sin Eater is a near immortal hunter of human and supernatural evil. This image shows key stages of his Physical transformation process.  Upon consuming the Sin of others, Khunbish transforms and evolves internally and externally.

First and left most, this images shows when he started hunting sinners.  His pursuit of Sin as food lead him to be in the service of the early Ottoman Empire. While he increased in physical size and abilities old wounds upon his face and legs began to heal.

As time passed the sins of man were not enough to slake his thirst.  He began hunting creatures of the supernatural world. His physical size began to increase past extraordinary human standards to meet the demands of the hunt, as seen by the center two figure studies.

He then traveled to the far east, was taught by monks to harness his inner powers and the powers granted to him by the consumption of Sin.  A side effect of moving majik was that the bark skin on his arm from the dryad bite spread even faster.

The far right image is his final physical form after years of intensive Training with the Tengu, Demon Swordsmen of Japan.

This series of concepts explores the layers of his "Dragon Slayer" armor. The top image is the complete suit. What follows are the various stages of dress. Traditional Turkish undergarments, his Skull Helmet, the long gambeson, all of the chain mail and plate typical to the Ottomans at the time and finally the Manica Segmata on his right arm, a left over from his service during the fall of the Byzantine Empire, and mismatched gauntlets salvaged from battlefields past serve to root the character in history.

Study of Khunbish's armor evolution at key story points.

Left figure shows the Original Complete armor set of the "Dragon Slayer."  It reflects the  diverse armor of Ottoman Akinji, who were the irregular cavalry, scout division and usually the first contact with enemy forces.  Since Khunbish was unable to ride horses, he heavily armored his upper body and torso, leaving the lower limbs lightly armored to allow greater speed and maneuverability.

The middle two figures illustrate his evolution from soldier to mercenary and caravan guard traveling the trade routes of northern Africa. He has some remaining armor from his time with the Ottomans. He has replaced worn out or destroyed armor with available resources, such as Crocodile skin augmented with "Jack Chains", metal plates designed to reduce damage from blunt impact. He had to rely on his own resources instead of the supply chain of the army, thus the added pouches.  The head dress of horns is a badge of honor earned slaying a fish demon in the Omo River for the Mursi tribe.  The outer robe is a variation on a bedouin design.  After he saved a caravan, he asked only for some cloth to repair his robes.  He was given a bolt of bright red silk.  He repaired his robe with squares and this is how he earned the name "Red Patches".

The right two figures show the gear he pieced together after the defeat of the greater demon Namtar.  Some of his gear survived the encounter.  The sword sheath on his back was crafted bay a Mursi shaman from the corpse of the defeated demon fish.  The rest of his kit was aquired while traveling the vast steps of Mongolia, China and Russia.  He incorporated the traditional boots and functional armor pieces of his Mongolian peoples. He added the hat and Demon Dire Bear cloak to deal with the winters.

In addition to the physical transformation, the gear carried by Khunbish changes thru the centuries as well.  This gear reflects the regions and times of historical events the Khunbish was participating as well as embracing the supernatural elements of his journey.

Khunbish developed many skills over the centuries out of necessity.  His consumption of sin also squelched his ability to use magik.   Once skills were used to solve the crisis at hand, his occupation and physical abnormalities made him an outcast.  He studied herbology, alchemy, and all medical treatises to speed the healing of his injuries.  He studied myth, folklore and legend to gain advantage over his quarry.  This cabinet contains his mobile lab and research library accumulated over more than a century.
