Round of applause for our sponsors

This is my showcase of work completed during my second year at the University of Hertfordshire. I specialise in 3D Character and Creature art. I hope you enjoy!

HUMANOID TREE CREATURE:

This creature was modelled in ZBrush and Retopologised using R3DS Wrap, with tree branches and other intricate parts retopped by hand in Maya. This was my first time using a UDIM set up in UE4, and faced some challenges with it when enabling virtual textures, such as transparency maps not being compatible and some consistency issues between UDIM and non-UDIM textured models. It was a great learning process overall and made importing textures much more streamlined.

ZOMBIE DEER:

Concept Art by Amba Arjoon

I used 3 UDIMs for this deer. I also made hair cards to add to parts of the deer, which were eventually removed for the final renders as they didn't animate well. He kept his eyelashes and whiskers!

I made a rig for this deer in blender using Rigify, along with a simple idle animation. As an introduction to rigging and game engine compatible rigs / animations, I definitely learnt a lot. I'm interested in giving this another go to try and understand the process more thoroughly, and perhaps make my own rig in maya. I definitely need to figure out how to incorporate hair cards.

Bonus mushroom creatures that were made for this project:

FISHERMAN:

This fisherman is the first human character I've had a go at creating - until now it had just been animals and creatures. The hair shader for this character was from the digital humans series.

Creating realistic human characters is something I'm going to be spending a lot of time and effort developing skills in over summer. I specifically want to focus on hair (going to look into real-time XGen in UE5, hair cards as well) and marvelous designer, as I've not had a go with that yet. I'm also going to create a realistic eye that can be reused for characters in the future, as I'm not often left with much time to work on those kind of details when doing uni assignments.

It would also be great to be able to bring my characters to life, so some rigging courses would be useful.

ELEPHANT STUDY:

I've been wanting to have a go at some realistic animal sculpts. As I don't have much time at uni to create any big projects alongside assignments, I worked on this ZBrush sculpt in my spare time and textured it in PolyPaint. I then did some edits in Photoshop.

I hope you enjoyed looking through my recent work! I've had a great time creating game art this year, I've come so far from where I was at this time last year and I'm more motivated than ever to keep pushing forwards. Already getting into the pre-production for my third-year project and I have big plans!
