This post contains some of my concept art/illustration work from 2021-2022. During those years, I have been studying at Howest DAE in Kortrijk in the VFX major. However, I have decided to include some personal work in this yearly portfolio to focus more on concept art and illustration and less on my 3D work.

This first project was for the Stylized Design class at DAE. The instructions of the assignment "Treasure guardian" was to create a set, an enemy, and a treasure. I decided to make my set based on a kelp forest as I find sea life very inspiring.

Instead of making the treasure an item, I thought it could be more interesting to make it a captive pet goldfish held by this large underwater sea creature.

When it comes to the art-style, I decided to base my shape design on a more toned down version of the illustrations of Kudaman. I learned a lot from it and was able to apply some of his shape design practices in other contexts later on.

I began exploring different creatures and treasures and environments that could be associated to that creature and bit by bit I made choices and narrowed down my designs and color choices to the ones I thought would fit best.

This next project was a personal one. I decided to design some creatures and illustrate them using the book "Mythical Beasts" as an inspiration. The book takes mythical creatures and renders them, in my opinion, more believable animals. I think it's a very interesting idea and I wanted to create a Bestiary based on the idea that these creatures are part of an ecosystem. They interact with each other and change because of each other. This is what lead a lot of my design decisions.

This project was a group project I worked on with 4 talented students. It's a 1 minute short animation we decided to name "Roots". Throughout this project I was in charge of animation, character design and creation, storyboarding, creating the poster, some set dressing and lighting and a lot of tree sculpting.

In this post I want to focus on my 2D work so I will only showcase the character design, storyboard and poster, as well as the short itself for context.

These two illustrations were a personal project I worked on to explore using very desaturated and calming colors in my work. I tried to focus on interesting color choices surrounding neutrals and flowy shape design.

This project was part of the character design course at DAE. The assignment was "Slave and slaver" so I decided to make a boy of noble descent from a sci-fi military family preparing to sell an alien-mermaid at a rare creature auction.

This project was my graduation work for DAE. I got 3D matte painting as a topic and decided to stretch it into stylized painting. My goal was to figure out a way to transfer paintings into 3D in an efficient way, while learning about the art-style of Arcane at the same time. This were the results of my research and application.
