Concept Art through Study
A collection of pieces from my studies at CDW studios
My Concept student journey
This entry into the Concept Art category of The Rookies is to showcase some work from the last year I have studied at CDW Studios.
Many new techniques were introduced to us and I developed better methods to work in the 2D and 3D spaces.
One of my first projects was a Dinosaur anatomy study which involved both the skeleton and skin.
Another project I completed was redesigning the He-Man character Buzz Off with a more aggressive aesthetic.
This project creature was envisioned as something that could dwell among the Star Trek universe and I believe it would fit my game universe too as it is creepy and quite antagonistic!
During the year I completed multiple projects in 2D to strengthen my skills as I feel I could improve them.
I took classes focusing on Digital Painting and made progress in compositions and story telling.
I had previously never painted many compositions and everything I learned involved new skills to grasp.
I also developed ideas for a game universe which I have been creating more pieces for this year.
The game is an open world RPG/Sandbox title that involves players working to find the source of an evil magic that controls creatures turning them into vicious monsters. The protagonist can amass ally creatures on their journey and explore the world, encountering various enemies and helping villages & towns.
Through out the classes I completed some studies alongside my own project to better understand colour, aiming to create something quickly without mulling over details.
For a major project I created creature lair with establishing, exterior, and interior shots.
The final pieces were in greyscale due to still learning how to apply colour realistically but I included colour in one image to see how far I could push the composition. These were standalone and not related to my game universe.
