I'm aiming to leave retouching behind and work solely as a CG artist within the next year or so.

I've worked in productions for years but only crossed over to CG a couple of years ago. I'm still learning new skill and tools (houdini being a big step) but having come from a photography background I think there is quite a few concepts that translate nicely.
