Round of applause for our sponsors

For my first personal project assignment on PlaygroundSquad, I decided to do this 3D Model based on the concept art of Justin Gerard, "The Werebat".
Please check his concept art: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/ybk0mn.

This was my first time doing hand painted textures and hair cards! and I learn a lot in the process.

Breakdown of the Process

For the hair system, I used a 1k texture and for the feather I used a 524k texture, intelligently cutting the feather in half twice and UV mapping it correctly.

I hand painted in Substance 3d Painter, almost everything by hand, a process that I can do very fast and it gives me more control of where do I want the details. I needed that control to really catch the essence of the original concept art.
At the same time, I learned a lot of things while I was doing it. As I said before, this was my first time and It was a constant learning process on colour theory, stroke placement and replication of the Original Justin's piece.

For the textures, I Mirror a lot of things like the ears, eyes, legs, claws in between others. I also used a lot of space in things that It would be shown in the beauty shot, but really made the islands tinier on parts of the model that the viewer is not meant to see.
Despite all of this savings, I decided to use 2 texture sets of 2k each as It gave me more detail to get the strokes right.

The roughness map I did it based on the hand made strokes with the brushes, making the shiny parts be also in the style of the original concept art.

Thank you!
