Harpy
This is a part of a project I partook in during September 2022 through to the following January. The brief was to design a bipedal creature with animal features.
As a mythology buff, I took this brief as an opportunity to explore some creatures from Greek mythology, but I was torn between two; the harpy and the water nymph. To settle it, I explored my ideas in silhouette thumbnails.
Still being a little torn, I decided to bring in the silhouettes together and sketch over them to see which I enjoyed best.
I felt the harpy was the strongest of the four, so I decided on it. However, she lacked a distinct personality, so I came up with a little story for her; a dancer harpy who salvaged shipwrecked ships for her costumes.
Deciding to keep with the ancient Greek theming , I went with the third design for a render and turnaround. The colouring of the feathers and the bird legs were based on harpy eagles.
