"Shambler" Quake Reimagined Concept

The aim of this project was to reimagine Quake's perhaps most iconic monster, the Shambler, building the creature from the ground up and applying modern design theory whilst establishing my own conceptual quirks.

When reimagining this monster, I wanted to emphasise on the gargantuan and overwhelming nature of the Shambler, conceptualising within the context of a hypothetical reboot of the Quake IP. Whilst I appreciated the aggressive and fast-paced gameplay loop of DOOM, I deeply enjoyed the more cautious and dread-induced approach to Quake's combat against monsters, so that was important to retain and keep in mind whilst redesigning the Shambler.

3D sculpting was used to explore and iterate upon the anatomy of the Shambler in a three-dimensional space. This was later used as reference for the orthographics in the design sheet.

The initial idea began with research drawings and early design exploration. The first pass seemed too much of a 'fluffball', so design elements were reiterated to appear more intimidating, using shape language, to lead into the second pass. This was backed with fur studies, re-evaluating the surface texture of the Shambler to strike a balance between skin and fur.
