"Shugendo's Abode" Environment Worldbuilding Concept
The aim of this project was to create an environment grounded in worldbuilding and visual storytelling, telling the story of an art student dropout that has gone down the path of a psychic and has converted their low-rent apartment into a mystical, introverted abode.
Combining 3D and 2D, I mostly referenced Feng Zhu's design breakdown process to create a compelling concept piece that rewards the viewer for looking deeper into the scene with a balance of function and form, as well as the mundane versus the psionic.
This began with an exploration through initial sketches and brainstorming, with a focus on exploring interesting geometry within a low-rent apartment space and the general storytelling. This quickly followed into the 3D blockout process by creating interesting visual clutter within a scene, then following up with texturing and lighting to establish the base for the 2D paintover process.
