Slight Dent
A lip syncing project With a robotic car salesman.
This project was very illuminating since it helped me develop new skills that I either did not have before or were lesser versions of skills I had already.
Initially I learned how to use some of the more basic features of toon boom by doing the examples given , the balloon example I grasped well and then could use parent pegs successfully in my own work however for the ball and lamp I used the rigs and technical features terribly , due to this I decided to use frame by frame for this project to keep it safe.
Project Development
I started the project by designing a character that would personally appeal to me to keep me motivated , I chose a sleazy looking robot to be the 'car salesmen' in the animation. I had to simplify some aspects of his design such as his hands since they were too complicated to animate as well as having to change his mouth so I could show more complicated lip synching rather then the puppet mouth inspired one I had initally planned.
When making my storyboards I wanted to make my character move around a lot since I felt that would add to the personality of the character , I did have some issues with trying to link some frames but I got around it , for example look at this didnt end up working with the flow of the story so I changed it to be him holding an image of the car and dropping it to then grab two bags of money. This flowed a lot better and was a lot more visually appealing and cohesive.
When I ended up making the mouths I wanted them to continue to portray the robotic nature of the guy so I made they jagged and when possible made them look like crooked smiles since it added to his sleazy image. This was successful since it allowed the complicated expressions of a human while not loosing out on the robotic aesthetic.
This was a very helpful learning experience , I started off slow due to my anxieties on the topic but once I sunk my teeth into it , it was a very fun and enjoyable experience. If I could of done anything differently I just would of started quicker as well as documenting my early progress and thoughts better.
