Antique Sextant
This is the final project that I made for my 3rd Year of studies at Side academy. A sextant is a navigation instrument that measures the angle between an astronomical object and the horizon for navigation purposes
The first thing I did after choosing the theme for my third-year project was to research all kinds of references. Since a Nautical sextant is a pretty complicated object I also decided to buy a toy model to better understand how it works. Having a replica of a real sextant helped me a lot with proportions and understanding how each piece was assembled to create the final object
As soon as I had a clear vision of what I wanted to achieve I started with the blocking of the object on Maya and after I got the proportions right I started adding details to my model until I completed it. I then started working on my UDIMs
I did my texturing on Adobe Substance Painter and then rendered it on Maya, I imported my model on Zbrush and I started creating bumps and scratches with a brush to create a displacement map to give it an antique and ruined look
After creating the displacement map I imported it on Adobe Substance Painter and I started creating all the materials of my sextant, I focused mostly on brass, wood, and steel. I made the mirror and the glass directly on Maya with a V-ray Material, I only used Substance Painter to create all the dirt and the scratches that I then applied on my Vray material
At the end I did all the render passes in Vray of the turntable and then rebuilt the shader on Nuke. I also decided to create a small scene with a compass and a Telescope to contextualize and present my Sexstant
