Treasure Chest

University assignment number two where we had to create a treasure box from concept, and use proper techniques to UV unwrap and texture. The entire model needed to be under 10,000 tris.

Concept Stage

We were tasked with developing a mood board and concept design document to plan our treasure chest model. I used finish elements from Hellraiser's Tesseract, camera apertures for the shape and opening, and my love for Lovecraftian stories.

Development Stage

I worked with Procreate, Illustrator and AutoCAD to work on some ideas for the gears. Procreate for doodling, Illustrator for quickly developing gear shapes and AutoCAD for checking scales as well as rotation points.

Modelling & Texturing Stage

Having used Blender in the past for game mods, I decided to lean on Maya a bit and learn the interface with Blender as backup. I ended up submitting both Blender and Maya files for my submission. This was the first time I really worked on proper UV unwrapping techniques - skills that would definitely help me improve on my mods in the future!

Texturing was completed in Substance Painter and I played around with making my own textures, alphas etc. using Illustrator.

Submission

I'm quite pleased with the final product, though there's always room for improvement. I still had some NGons that I didn't quite catch, however I now know how to find them quickly within Blender, I could've used my UV maps more efficiently and I could've been more adventurous in my concept.

This assignment was a blast though and definitely an exercise I'm looking forward to going through again once the semester's over!
