Old magic crab

This is my first personal project , made during the master cg at skyup academy and this final render was obtained using Vray.

I mixed and matched different kind of crustacean , but my main reference was the land crab since its cuter look was ideal to get a more cartoony effect, i also gave him wrinkles ,long whiskers and made barnacles on the teapot to give him an older feel. Finally the materials and general mood were inspired by chinese temples and the golden statues within

At first i started sketching some basic concepts, following a theme selected by the academy, the theme was magic creatures and demons from the east. I came up with the idea of an ancient mystical crab that lives in a teapot giving advice and tea to those in need of help , like some sort of old master.

I made a maquette using monster clay and steel wires  to get a better understanding of the volumes.

At  last  i commenced the modelling process ,starting from a rough blockout , proceeding to detail  every part.     I had some difficulties getting the actual shape of the body right ,but after that it was smooth sailing.
